Abstract

Since humans and human societies realized their importance, roads have brought dependencies for the communities that lived in their vicinity, which continued until the late Islamic centuries. These communities always considered two factors: short distances and climatic conditions in the construction and establishment of communication road networks, as well as intermediate buildings and structures. This research was conducted with the aim of understanding the formation and function of intermediate buildings and structures located in the communication road network of Tehran province, which also raises two questions: 1) What was the main reason for the creation and construction of intermediate buildings and structures on the ancient roads of Tehran province by the rulers of the late Islamic centuries? 2) What structure and framework are the intermediate buildings and structures built on the ancient roads of Tehran province related to the late Islamic centuries considered part of? The present research was conducted using a descriptive-analytical method and data collection was also carried out in the form of a study of historical documents and texts and archaeological field surveys. The results of this study indicate that, apart from the dimension of "trade and commercial development", political, cultural, and religious relations and factors such as the great distance between commercial centers, the involvement of environmental factors, etc., were influential in the origin and formation of midway buildings and structures located in the communication road network of Tehran province related to the late Islamic centuries.
