[English]

The Do Khaharan Quarter in Nahavand County (Hamadan Province) takes its name from a structure known as the “Do-Khaharan Imamzadeh”. The accidental discovery of a Greek inscription in 1943 (1322 SH) near this Imamzadeh raised the hypothesis of a connection between the site and the “Laodicea Temple” (the sister of Queen Laodice, wife of Antiochus III) of the Seleucid period. Despite several seasons of archaeological excavation, previous studies have addressed only partial aspects of the Seleucid remains and the temple, leaving the central question unanswered: the semantic relationship between the Do Khaharan Imamzadeh and the temple of Queen Laodicea's sister. The present study seeks to answer whether any connection exists between the structure and nature of the Do Khaharan Imamzadeh and the Laodicea Temple, and whether the Imamzadeh has a historical and genealogical root traceable to the Infallible Imams or is a later construct of the Islamic era shaped within popular beliefs. This research employs a historical-analytical method with a holistic approach to all archaeological findings (soundings around the Imamzadeh, pottery, and architectural remains) and epigraphic data (the text of the Nahavand Greek inscription), examined through comparative analysis of relative chronology and content analysis of the inscription. Archaeological investigations show that the current structure of the Imamzadeh does not date earlier than the 8th century AH, and no functional or structural continuity is observable between it and the Seleucid period. Furthermore, content analysis of the Nahavand Greek inscription reveals that the title “sister of Laodicea” does not imply the existence of two sisters; rather, it is an honorific title that Antiochus III bestowed upon his wife (Queen Laodicea) after she assumed the position of “Great Priestess”. The name “Do Khaharan” (Two Sisters) derives from an attribution to this very title and has no connection to two actual sisters. Moreover, attributing this site to the “two sisters of Imam Reza (AS)” in the Islamic era lacks any historical, epigraphic (genealogical or Shajarnameh), or archaeological support, and is a construct of the middle and late Islamic centuries shaped within popular beliefs. Therefore, the original nature of this site dates back to the Seleucid period and the Laodicea Temple, and the existing Imamzadeh has a completely different function and does not rest upon solid foundations.
